James Webster Johnson

James (Jim) Webster Johnson, age 90, of Ephrata, WA, departed peacefully on January 25, 2024. Jim was a beloved husband, father, innovator, and friend, leaving behind a legacy of love, dedication, and inspiration. Born in rural Arkansas to James Louie and Madge Johnson, Jim faced early challenges with the loss of his mother at the age of 14. He and his father relocated to Michigan, where Jim's journey of service and accomplishment began. After graduation from Alma College, Jim volunteered as a medic in the U.S. Army, stationed in Germany, showcasing his commitment to others from an early age. Returning to civilian life, Jim embarked on a distinguished career in the banking industry in Michigan. It was during this me that he met Phyllis Anne, his life partner. Their union in 1963 marked the beginning of a remarkable 60-year journey filled with love, laughter, and unwavering mutual support. Jim's leadership and dedication in banking eventually led him to the esteemed position of bank president in Traverse City. Never one to shy away from new challenges, Jim ventured into the agricultural sector, embodying an entrepreneurial spirit and commitment to quality. Co-founding ModernAg, he guided the company from a humble start to a thriving enterprise that produced and distributed fertilizers regionally and internationally. Jim is lovingly remembered by his wife, Phyllis Anne Johnson, and their 6 children Blake (Jeanie) Johnson, Bill (Carolyn) Johnson, Emma (Bruce) Jensen, Sarah (Kelly) Johansson, Katie (Cliff) Reynolds, Abbie (Jeff) McCully 17 grandchildren, and 6 great-grandchildren. His role as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather was the cornerstone of his life. Beyond his professional success, Jim was a man of diverse talents and interests. Woodworking, gardening, and beekeeping were among his cherished hobbies, reflecting his deep connection to creation and nature. As a family historian, he meticulously traced his roots back for hundreds of years, preserving a rich legacy for future generations. Jim's life was deeply rooted in his membership and unwavering faith in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. His commitment to living the principles of the gospel was evident in every aspect of his life, serving as a guiding light for those around him. Jim's devotion to his faith enriched his journey, fostering a legacy of kindness, compassion, and steadfast belief in the principles he held dear. Jim's journey, from the fields of Arkansas to becoming a significant figure in banking and agriculture, is a story of perseverance, dedication, and love. His legacy of strength, integrity, and kindness will forever be remembered and cherished by those fortunate enough to have known him. A celebration of Jim’s life will take place on Thursday, February 1st, with a viewing at 9:00 am and services at 10:00 am at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
