Doreen Marie Sloan
October 15, 1930 - January 28, 2015
Doreen Sloan gracefully left this earth on Wednesday, January 28, 2015. She was the last surviving member of the Walter family, being the second to the youngest of 11 siblings. With her late husband Red, they celebrated 62 years of marriage and raised 5 children, Waynette Lipke (husband Harry) of Yreka, Madonna Franks (husband Dennis) of Montague, Johnny Sloan (wife Laurie) of Ellensburg, WA, Mary Fugitt (husband Dan) of Bakersfield, and Lynette McMillan (husband Mark) of Soap Lake, WA. They were blessed with 19 grandchildren, and 8 great grandchildren. She loved God, hot coffee, babies and horses. Doreen was a compassionate woman who truly cared about other people, always doing her best to make the world a better place. She was born in Canada, on October 15, 1930, daughter of Constance and C.J. Walter. She grew up on her family's dude ranch in upstate New York and was a daring trick rider, entertaining guests at the weekly rodeos. Residents of Siskiyou County may not have known about Doreen's more adventurous side, but they knew her as the owner of Rainbows End for 25 years and member of the Grenada Community Berean Church. Her accomplishments were many and varied; published author, Dude Ranching with the Walter Family, local reporter for the Siskiyou Daily News and Simi Valley News, Teachers Aide at Grenada Elementary School, and Grenada 4-H leader for 30 years, leading the kids in trips to the State Fair, producing skits, supervising fair booths, organizing care packages for the soldiers and fundraisers for the adoption of Korean orphans. She worked on the local Giving Tree at Christmas, one of the first distributors for singer/song writer Chris LeDoux, and was prolific at sewing, knitting and crocheting. Doreen was the most generous person, always ready to help anyone in need and opened her home to everyone. We will miss her. In lieu of flowers, Doreen’s friends can make a donation to Cal Farley’s Boys Ranch for boys and girls. Please express your thoughts and memories for the family at www.nicolesfuneralhome.com. Arrangements are under the care of Nicoles Funeral Home of Ephrata, Wa.
